Kosierowski, Donahue, Mullins: over $1 million awarded to community development and revitalization center

HARRISBURG, Oct. 10 – State Reps. Kyle Donahue, Bridget Kosierowski, and Kyle Mullins announced today that the United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA – CEDAR Center was awarded a $1.24 million grant to encourage economic growth.

The representatives said the center, located at 530 Cedar Ave. as the former Penn Security Bank building, will redevelop a historic commercial structure into the Community Education Development and Revitalization Center.

“These grants are vitally important for our community,” said Donahue. “The CEDAR center, located in the heart of South Scranton, will become a new regional hub, allowing the United Neighborhood Centers and partners to expand comprehensive services in education, job readiness, workforce development, community health, and immigrant integration. It truly will become a center that not only promotes economic growth but maximizes the quality of living in northeastern Pennsylvania and I was proud to be able to help secure this investment.”

“The United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania provides many great resources to those in the community,” said Kosierowski. “They do great work in empowering the community to build strong, interdependent communities. Funding this organization allows them to continue to foster this supportive relationship they have with those who live here, helping us ensure that the future of this region remains successful and bright.”

“Not only does the United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania facilitate economic growth and more opportunities for those living in Lackawanna County and beyond with their in-house resources, but they also have information on state programs like the Pennsylvania Keystone Stars, which helps prepare children for their kindergarten classrooms,” said Mullins. “They are a great hub of information that will continue to reach more people with this funding.”

The Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program, which this funding comes from, is funded pursuant to the Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund, established by Section 604 of the Social Security Act, as added by Section 9901 of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority administers the Facilities Program in accordance with U.S. Treasury guidelines and Act 96 of 2021.
