Mayes celebrates $5 million for Pittsburgh schools

State grant to fund HVAC improvements

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 12 – Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes is celebrating a $5 million state grant awarded to Pittsburgh School District that will help make HVAC updates at 11 Pittsburgh schools, including Weil PreK-5 and Westinghouse Academy 6-12 that she represents in the 24th Legislative District.

“Using tax dollars to create safer schools is one of the best investments the state can make to address education and environmental justice,” said Mayes, D-Allegheny. “I want to thank my colleagues in the House and Senate who fought alongside me to win this funding for Pittsburgh. I’ll continue doing everything I can to create safe and healthy learning environments within Pittsburgh’s public school system.”

Mayes said the award will help install HVAC digital systems to better control indoor pollutants and exhaust airflow in the schools.

Funds were awarded through the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program, created to provide grants to public school districts and area career and technical schools for eligible facility improvement projects. The program is administered by the state Department of Community and Economic Development under the direction of the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Grants are available for eligible improvement projects with a total project cost of $500,000 or more and grants shall not exceed $5 million for any project.
