House Majority Policy Committee tours Google, talks artificial intelligence and internet safety

Tour and roundtable discussion held at Google’s Pittsburgh offices

PITTSBURGH, March 13 – Building off recent conversations on artificial intelligence, the House Majority Policy Committee toured Google’s Pittsburgh offices and participated in a roundtable Wednesday morning to learn more about this new technology and discuss efforts to maintain child internet safety.

The event was hosted by House Majority Policy Committee Chairman Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie). Committee members were led on a tour of Google’s unique office space, which first opened in 2006 as a two-person operation at Carnegie Mellon. Now, Bakery Square is home to Google’s Pittsburgh offices and its nearly 1,000 employees. With large investments in the area by Google, Chairman Bizzarro noted the endless possibilities of working with responsible tech companies.

“Between employment opportunities and recent investments in the Pittsburgh area, it’s easy to see the economic impact a company like Google has in Allegheny County and across the commonwealth,” Bizzarro said. “Pennsylvania is open for business, and we’ve proven that we can accommodate companies of any size. It’s vital that we do everything we can to attract more business to the Keystone State and seize the benefits that come along with it.”

Following the tour, members were presented with the latest information on artificial intelligence technology and child internet safety efforts from Google employees. Experts laid out the many ways AI can be utilized across different fields, as well as the need for proper regulation. Additionally, conversations focused on Google’s efforts to protect, respect and empower kids and teens as they use the internet.

“There is still a lot to learn about artificial intelligence, including how it can be used with both good and bad intentions. This technology is still new and evolving, so we need continue talking about its impact on our everyday lives,” Bizzarro said. “I look forward to the conversations to come as we work to identify ways we can utilize it’s full potential in a safe, secure manner.”

Wednesday’s event expands on recent efforts by House Democrats to learn more about artificial intelligence and everything that comes along with it. The House Majority Policy Committee recently convened a hearing on the topic, bringing in experts from the technology, medical and education fields.
