Madsen celebrates funding for Harrisburg SD

HARRISBURG, May 21 – State Rep. Dave Madsen, D-Dauphin, today announced that Harrisburg City School District in Dauphin County has been awarded a grant of $599,999 under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.

"Supporting our students with comprehensive programs both inside and outside the classroom is essential for their growth and success,” Madsen said. “Through the 21st CCLC program, we are ensuring that students receive valuable enrichment activities, counseling, tutoring, internships, and more, which are vital for them to thrive academically and personally."

Madsen said the funding is part of a broader initiative where 61 organizations across 18 counties will receive more than $27 million in total.

The 21st CCLC program is designed to establish and support community learning centers that provide academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities for students and their families. The centers are critical in offering meaningful wrap-around services to students, particularly those from low-performing schools to help them to meet state academic standards.

The Harrisburg City School District plans to utilize the funding to enhance its educational offerings significantly, Madsen said. The grant will support various programs and services, including:

  • Academic enrichment through tutorial services aimed at helping students meet state standards.
  • An array of additional services such as youth development, arts, music, physical fitness, and wellness programs.
  • Technology and financial literacy education.
  • Career and technical programs, including internships and apprenticeships tied to high-demand industry sectors.
  • Nutritional and health education, drug and violence prevention, and counseling programs.
  • Opportunities for families to engage actively and meaningfully in their children’s education through literacy and educational development activities.
