CHELTENHAM, Nov. 4 – State Sen. Art Haywood and state Rep. Napoleon Nelson presented a $1 million check for Cheltenham Township from Local Share Account Statewide Program funding. Cheltenham will utilize these funds to renovate the Rowland Community Center, a vital resource for the community.
“This grant is an essential step toward revitalizing the Rowland Community Center and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Cheltenham Township,” Nelson said. “It is crucial that our community spaces are safe, accessible and equipped to serve the public effectively.”
Haywood added, “This funding is a significant investment in our community, ensuring that the Rowland Community Center will continue to be a welcoming space for all residents. Together, we are making strides toward a better future for Cheltenham.”
The township’s renovation plan is part of phase I of a comprehensive five-year strategic management plan adopted in 2020. This plan identifies necessary structural improvements, including the demolition of parts of the existing facility, which currently does not meet modern construction or federal ADA standards. Due to inoperable HVAC and electrical systems that have exceeded their life expectancy, the center cannot remain open during colder months. The renovation will address these critical issues, ensuring the building meets safety standards and is accessible to all residents.
“Dignity in community means recognizing that every dollar we put into our schools, public spaces is a dollar invested in us,” Haywood said. “Investing in places like the Rowland Community Center is more than just improving a building; it’s a commitment to safe, welcoming spaces where every resident can feel a sense of belonging. This is what dignity in action looks like—building a stronger foundation for Cheltenham that honors each of us, no matter who we are.”
The project has a total cost of $6,734,493 and will also utilize additional funding sources, including a pending $2.5 million from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and $3,234,493 from Cheltenham Township. The LSA funds will specifically support demolition, construction, equipment purchases and installation costs.
Administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Local Share Account allocates gaming revenue to projects that enhance the quality of life for citizens across the Commonwealth.
Both Nelson and Haywood said they remain committed to advocating for resources that benefit their communities and look forward to seeing the positive impact of these renovations on Cheltenham Township.
Nelson represents the 154th Legislative District, which includes Cheltenham, Jenkintown, and Springfield in Montgomery County. Haywood serves the 4th Senatorial District, which encompasses parts of Philadelphia and Montgomery counties.
