Steele: More than $9,200 secured for Highlands SD environmental repairs

TARENTUM, Sept. 9 – A $9,243 grant to Highlands School District will fund improvements to ensure students and staff have the healthiest possible learning environment, state Rep. Mandy Steele announced today.
Steele, D-Allegheny, said the grant – which was awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Public School Environmental Repairs Program – will fund needed facility upgrades.
“Students in our district are fortunate to have some of the most dedicated teachers and school staff imaginable, but we need to make sure our school facilities keep pace with the quality of the curriculum,” Steele said. “That’s why we worked to pass budget funding that will allow schools to identify and address any potential environmental hazards. With the new funding, Highlands School District can move forward with project repairs to ensure students and staff enjoy the safe, hazard-free facilities they deserve.”
The funding is part of a package of $75 million secured in the state’s 2023-24 budget and awarded under the PDE Environmental Repairs Program. Schools can use the money to improve water infrastructure and eliminate contamination, install point-of-use treatment devices to reduce lead and other contaminants, remediate mold or asbestos contamination and perform other projects that remediate environmental hazards.
