Mayes: More than $200,000 awarded to East Hills neighborhood

Grant will fund green stormwater infrastructure

HARRISBURG, Jan. 13 – State Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes, D-Allegheny, announced today that a $230,736 state grant has been awarded to a project in her community.

The proposed project is funded by the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Growing Greener Plus Program and will construct green stormwater infrastructure on two vacant lots in the East Hills neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

“Improperly managed stormwater runoff can cause a lot of damage to property and the environment in general,” Mayes said. “Green stormwater systems are known to slow the rate of water flow and filter out harmful pollutants before they drain into our waterways.

“Securing this funding is a step in the right direction of making the City of Pittsburgh’s environment less polluted, safer to live in for more of its residents and advances environmental justice,” Mayes said.

Growing Greener is the largest single investment of state funds in Pennsylvania’s history to address critical environmental concerns. Grantees have up to three years to implement their projects.
