The Fairness Act passed 102-98
Rep. La'Tasha D. Mayes October 11, 2023 | 4:20 PM
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 11 – In celebration of National Coming Out Day, state Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes, D-Allegheny, celebrated passage of the Fairness Act earlier this year in the state House of Representatives.
The Fairness Act would prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression. It passed the House Tuesday, May 2 and now awaits consideration in the Senate State Government Committee.
“Protecting LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians from discrimination is one way we can create a commonwealth where people can feel safe and affirmed when they come out and it helps them to know their legislators are tirelessly working to ensure equality for all Pennsylvanians,” Mayes said. “I call upon the Senate to consider the Fairness Act so that all Pennsylvanians may proudly express their identity in our commonwealth.”
Mayes is the first out lesbian to serve in the Pennsylvania General Assembly and has been a LGBTQ+ organizer and activist for over 20 years.
