Allegheny House Dems welcome $4.1 million to repair Pittsburgh schools

School districts across Allegheny County awarded a total of $10.6 million in funding

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 10 – Members of the Allegheny County House Democratic Delegation representing Pittsburgh School District today announced a state grant of more than $4.1 million has been awarded to repair schools in the city.

The award was secured through the PA Department of Education’s Environmental Repairs Grants program with funding provided in the previous year’s state budget (2023-24). The grant is to be used for improvements to air conditioning or heating, removal of lead and asbestos, and repairs to roofs or other environmental hazards.

“Our students deserve the opportunity to excel in and out of the classroom at the highest possible potential,” said state Rep. Aerion A. Abney, D-Allegheny. “These dollars are personal investments in their health, safety and success.”

“Our school buildings need to be as safe as possible, and that includes ensuring they are free of environmental hazards,” state Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, said. “We worked to pass a budget that allows school districts to identify and eliminate any dangers like mold, lead or other problems. The new funding will give Pittsburgh School District the tools to do that, so students and staff enjoy the safest possible learning environment.”

“This is an investment in the health and success of our students,” said state Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes, D-Allegheny. “We’ll continue fighting for adequate and equitable funding in Harrisburg to create safer schools here in Pittsburgh and across the Commonwealth.”

“Student health and safety must be one of our top priorities in funding public schools,” said state Rep. Jessica Benham, D-Allegheny. “These grants will help make critical improvements to schools across the county to create better learning environments for our kids.”

In addition to Abney, Benham, Frankel, and Mayes, members of the Allegheny County Delegation representing Pittsburgh School District include state Reps. Dan Deasy, Emily Kinkead, Nick Pisciottano, Lindsay Powell, and Abigail Salisbury.

A total of $10.6 million in funding was awarded to schools across Allegheny County. The grants are part of $75 million awarded to 109 school districts across the state in this round of funding.
