HARRISBURG, June 25 – Landmark legislation that would add state-level protections for contraceptive access ( H.B. 1140 ) was approved by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today, according to the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Leanne Krueger. Krueger, D-Delaware, said efforts by extreme, anti-choice legislators and activists to deny people’s access to safe, proven and FDA-approved contraceptive methods to prevent pregnancy and treat other medical conditions prompted the need for this legislation that she has introduced every session since 2020. She said the legislation became more crucial when the U.S. Supreme overturned Roe v Wade in its 2022 Dobbs decision and gave each state the authority to decide women’s reproductive rights. "Contraception is health care, plain and simple, and no one but a woman and her doctor should decide what medical care she has the right to receive," Krueger said. “Pennsylvania currently has no protections in state law for contraceptive access, so attacks at the federal level jeopardize our access. This bill received unanimous approval in committee and passed with a bipartisan vote of 133-69 in the House. on Monday we had a bipartisan vote to pass a bill that would transform public education funding. I was proud to vote yes on H.B. 2370. A legal case filed over a decade ago by Delco’s William Penn School District, parents and education advocates led to a 2023 Commonwealth Court decision which found Pennsylvania’s method of funding its 500 school districts to be unconstitutional and directed the legislature to fix it. H.B. 2370 would set in motion a new system to meet the court’s test for funding adequacy and equity. Read more

The House returned to voting session this week. Among the bills expected to pass this week are measures that would better support children and families in a variety of ways. The voting calendar includes legislation (H.B. 1958) that would build on the Child and Dependent Tax Credit for working families that I voted for last year by offering tax credits to businesses who help their employees with childcare expenses. This bill would help keep parents in the workforce and give them peace of mind while helping employers attract and retain great employees. Read more

The House passed legislation (H.B. 1632) with bipartisan support that would make post-traumatic stress injury an eligible claim for first responders filing for workers’ compensation. I voted yes. This is a bill that police officers, EMS workers and firefighters have been fighting for over many years. It’s National Nurses Week, a time to highlight and honor the incredible work of nurses everywhere. In addition to acknowledging their commitment to taking care of patients, we have a duty to ensure that they and all healthcare workers are afforded a safe, violence-free workplace where they can work and perform their duties without the fear of bodily harm or fear for their personal safety. Unfortunately, PA’s nurses and healthcare workers are reporting in alarming numbers that they have personally experienced violence in their workplace and that their hospital or facility does NOT do enough to protect them from it. BROOKHAVEN, April 30 – State Rep. Leanne Krueger and Sen. John Kane are hosting a free paper shredding and drug takeback event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11 at Upland Park in Brookhaven. The shred event provides an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of documents containing personal information, thereby protecting them from potential identity theft. Community members also are invited to bring any unneeded medications to have them disposed of safely and properly by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Mobile Drug Collection Unit. The two events will take place simultaneously. “Shredding documents that contain sensitive information is one of the best ways to protect yourself from identity theft, so my office is happy to provide this free service to the people we serve,” said Krueger, D-Delaware. “Our prior shredding and drug takeback events have been major successes, so we want to continue to offer the services that are most needed in our community.
