Malagari bill H.B. 1379 passes PA House, heads to state Senate to support retired first responders

LANSDALE, Oct. 22 – Pennsylvania's retired municipal police officers and firefighters are one step closer to receiving long-overdue financial relief as legislation (H.B. 1379) has passed the PA House and is now headed to the state Senate for consideration.

“Passing this bill is a critical first step in doing right by our first responders,” said Malagari, D-Montgomery. “For 22 years, they’ve waited for an adjustment that reflects their sacrifice and the rising cost of living. With this bill, we’re ensuring they receive the support they need and deserve. Now, we’re looking to the Senate to finalize this vital measure.”

The legislation proposes monthly pension increases for retired first responders who have been out of service for at least five years, providing a $75 increase per month for those retired fewer than 10 years, $150 per month for those retired at least 10 years but fewer than 20 years, and $300 per month for those retired over 20 years.

House Bill 1379 not only would address the financial needs of retirees but also help retain current police officers and firefighters while making recruitment into these demanding roles more attractive. The bill has garnered widespread support from organizations such as the Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association, which have emphasized the importance of keeping retirement benefits competitive.

The legislation, which also includes similar COLA provisions for retired teachers and state workers, is expected to benefit nearly 70,000 older Pennsylvanians who have dedicated their lives to public service. The proposed increases range from 15% to 24.5%, depending on the length of retirement.

With the bill now advancing to the Senate, supporters are hopeful that the final legislative hurdle will be cleared before the adjustments take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
